Yellowjackets in New Jersey
Yellowjacket Identification, Prevention & Professional Control
Yellowjackets are among the most aggressive stinging insects found in New Jersey. Unlike honey bees, which generally sting only when threatened, yellowjackets will aggressively defend their nests and may sting repeatedly if disturbed.
They become especially active during late summer and early fall, when their colonies reach peak size and natural food sources begin to decline. At this time of year, yellowjackets are commonly attracted to outdoor meals, garbage containers, sugary drinks, and pet food.
At Bug Bust Pest & Termite, we safely locate and treat yellowjacket nests while helping homeowners understand why they chose the location and how to reduce the chances of future infestations.
How to Identify Yellowjackets
Yellowjackets are often mistaken for honey bees because of their yellow and black coloring, but there are several important differences.
Yellowjackets typically:
Have smooth, shiny bodies with little visible hair.
Are bright yellow and black.
Measure approximately Β½ inch long.
Fly quickly and directly.
Can sting multiple times.
Become increasingly aggressive as summer progresses.
Unlike honey bees, yellowjackets do not lose their stinger after attacking.
Where Do Yellowjackets Nest?
Yellowjackets commonly build nests in:
Underground rodent burrows
Landscaped areas
Retaining walls
Mulch beds
Wall voids
Attics
Crawl spaces
Utility penetrations
Dense shrubs
Many homeowners accidentally discover underground nests while mowing the lawn or working in flower beds.
Why Are Yellowjackets So Aggressive?
During spring and early summer, workers spend most of their time collecting insects to feed developing larvae.
As summer comes to an end and the colony reaches its largest size, the larvae produce less food for the workers. The workers begin searching for alternative food sources, including:
Soft drinks
Fruit
Barbecue foods
Garbage
Outdoor trash receptacles
Pet food
This change in behavior explains why yellowjackets seem much more aggressive during late August and September.
Signs of a Yellowjacket Nest
You may have a yellowjacket nest if you notice:
Numerous wasps flying in and out of one location.
Continuous activity near a hole in the ground.
Increased wasp activity around outdoor eating areas.
Wasps entering siding or soffit openings.
Aggressive behavior when mowing or gardening.
Can You Remove a Yellowjacket Nest Yourself?
Removing a yellowjacket nest without proper equipment can be dangerous.
Disturbing a nest may trigger hundreds of defensive workers to attack simultaneously.
Professional treatment allows the nest to be treated safely while minimizing the risk of multiple stings.
Prevention Tips
You can help reduce yellowjacket activity by:
Keeping garbage containers tightly closed.
Cleaning outdoor grills after use.
Picking up fallen fruit.
Covering sugary drinks when outdoors.
Sealing openings around the home.
Monitoring landscaping for developing nests during spring and summer.
Early detection often prevents colonies from reaching their maximum size.
From the Inspector
Yellowjackets are probably the stinging insect I receive the most calls about in late summer. Most homeowners don't know there's a nest until they accidentally disturb it while mowing, trimming shrubs, or working in the yard.
One thing I've learned over the years is that every situation is a little different. Underground nests, wall voids, and landscape beds each require a different approach. My goal is to locate the colony, treat it safely, and explain why it developed there so homeowners can reduce the chances of another nest next season.

Fact: Yellowjackets are wasps. Unlike honey bees, they can sting multiple times and are generally much more aggressive when defending their nests.
Myth: Killing a few yellowjackets eliminates the problem.
Fact: A mature colony may contain hundreds or even thousands of workers. Eliminating individual wasps does not remove the nest.
Myth: Yellowjackets only nest underground.
Fact: While many colonies develop in the ground, yellowjackets also nest inside wall voids, attics, crawl spaces, and other protected locations.
